The Voices of Tomo

Nobuo Tobita, the original voice of Fushigi Yuugi's Tomo!

Ahh this is why I loved Tomo...his voice was so beautiful. It's so calm and soothing, I could listen to him all day.  Nobuo Tobita has done a tremendous job!

And then I watched the English dub. OMG WOW LOL!!! It was AWFUL!!! He sounds annoying and obnoxious! He sounds like Snape Potter Puppets and Squidward. Considering that this was the late 90’s and early 2000’s, American perception at that time thought gay men sounded a certain way, so of course this kind of stereotypical voice was given to Tomo. The only thing that the voice actor got down right was the cackle and I think that’s the main reason why he got hired! Otherwise, it’s not the beautiful, soft, dreamlike tenor that I fell in love with. But I give props to the actor for changing his voice on the kind of character he’s portraying, like Aono and “girl” Tomo.

I’ve listened to the French version, and this Tomo sounded the closest to the original amazing Mr. Tobita.  It’s beautiful, calm, and fay sounding. I’ve also listened to the Tagalog dub. This is perhaps the most different compared to the other dubs. This Tomo sounded rough and gruff, like a real bad guy. In some ways this makes perfect sense. To those familiar with Beijing Opera, actors that play Jing characters, in which Tomo is most likely one, they generally have the most robust voice and have the most commanding presence.  Usually strong character types, the kinds that steal the show.

Listen to the voice comparisons below.  The order is from Japanese, English, French, to Tagalog.
